Kind Minds Heal Hearts started as a grassroots group at a dog park in Tulsa, Oklahoma with Martha Brown and Dr. Steven Byers. Martha started off with a seminar in April 2015 by inviting Dr. Maya Gupta to speak at that time.

The AniCare Approach was designed by a group of therapists and utilized by Animals and Society. We now have several therapists who are using this specific design and have a desire to increase interest and grow through raising awareness to this methodology.

Getting others involved is our primary goal. We need District attorneys, law enforcement officers, judges, therapists, counselors, social workers, educators and a variety of other social service people to get involved as to provide alternative treatment and therapy for those who abuse animals.  We may also have DA’s use this as an alternative to incarceration.

The AniCare approach is designed to treat individuals who abuse animals, but it is also used in the prevention of animal abuse and a stepping stone in the prevention of continued animal abuse, prevention of domestic violence, and other forms of abuse and the continuation of abusive effects. It can also help individuals who witness such abuse and help them cope.

The speaker is Melissa “Missy” Ezell who earned her BA at Northeastern State University as well as her Master’s in Counseling Psychology. She has been using the AniCare Approach in her practicum 2 and her internship at Health Concepts in Tulsa Oklahoma. She has a strong desire to help minimize violence in all aspects and is dedicated to helping people and treating individuals who need her skills.

We have high hopes that this strategy will be just as successful here in Oklahoma.
